FAQ
What is Wi Fi?
It’s another way to get Internet access. Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity and is used to define any of the wireless technology in the IEEE 802.11 specification - including (but not necessarily limited to) the wireless protocols 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. The Wi-Fi Alliance is the body responsible for promoting the term and its association with various wireless technology standards.

What is a Wi Fi Hotspot?
A Wi Fi hotspot is defined as any location in which 802.11 (wireless) technologies both exists and is available for use to consumers. In some cases the wireless access is free, and in others, wireless carriers charge for Wi Fi usage. Generally, the most common usage of Wi Fi technology is for laptop users to gain Internet access in locations such as airports, coffee shops, and so on, where Wi Fi technology can be used to help consumers in their pursuit of work-based or recreational Internet usage.

How Can I Use Wi Fi?
You must be using a desktop computer or laptop or PDA that has Wi Fi connectivity already working. Most portable computers can add Wi Fi using an adapter that plugs into a PC card slot or USB port. Alternatively, you can enable them by adding a USB wire free dongle provided by us.

Do I need to have an account with a Wi Fi service provider?
Yes even if your laptop is wifi enabled, you will still need a broadband connection from WI5 wireless broadband to enjoy true internet freedom with speeds up to 1Mbps! Desktop computers may require an additional device like USB dongle (in city) or a Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) in small towns to receive the Wi5 wireless broadband signal.

Is Wi Fi the same as Bluetooth?
No. While both are wireless technology terms, Bluetooth technology lives under the IEEE protocol 802.15.1, while Wi Fi falls under the 802.11 specification. What this means for consumers is that appliances using Wi Fi technology and those using Bluetooth technology are not interoperable. Bluetooth and Wi Fi are different in several ways, and are not necessarily in competition. Wi Fi technology boasts faster data transfer speeds and range, making it a good replacement for Ethernet (802.3) systems, while Bluetooth requires less power and is therefore more prominent in small appliances, such as PDAs.

5. Security Issues          ˆTop

When I try to connect to your network, it says unsecured network. Is your network secure
The meaning of 'unsecured network' is that data between the your laptop and Access point is not encrypted.
Your network is totally secure and only authorised people can login to it.  Our network is similar to a wired broadband connection where there is no encryption between customer's machine and internet. But, customer can always use the connection without any fear for doing any transaction with a website as long as that website is secure (that is it has a SSL certificate, which is indicated by a padlock displayed generally at the bottom right corner of the web browser.  If you are still not satisfied the encryption (between your computer and Access point) can be provided as an additional service.

Your network is shown as un secure, will I be able to do net banking securely
You can always transact on any website as long as that website is secure (that is it has a SSL certificate, which is indicated by a padlock displayed generally at bottom right corner of the web browser).
Online Safety
1. Is Wi5 access less secure than a wired internet connection?
WLANs transmit data wirelessly, over the air. Although data traveling on a wired network can be intercepted, wireless communications are relatively more vulnerable in this regard. But, wi5 has put in place adequate security mechanisms toensure that only authorised person can access its network. But, as mentioned above, because data travels over the air in WLANs, it is recommended that users also employ additional security safeguards such as those mentioned in this FAQ.

2. Are my user name and password secure when I'm logging on to Wi5?
Wi5 uses secure socket layer (SSL) technology to encrypt user name and password information during log-on. SSL is the current standard encryption technique recommended for web-based transactions across the internet. Wi5 authentication process is bi-directional i.e. it authenticates the user logging on, and in order to deter "rogue access points", it presents a certificate to the user showing a connection to Wi5.

3. Is my credit card information safe when I'm signing up for your service online?
Most of the online credit card transaction process employs SSL encryption.
Please note that Wi5 does not provide security with respect to use of 3rd party websites and/or services. It is strongly recommended that one deals only with trusted sources and service providers on the internet.

4. How do I know that a site has employed SSL encryption?
Different browsers and web sites use different methods to denote security or SSL encryption, but, one commonly used indicator is that the address is shown as https://... on the web browser, and a closed padlock or key icon appears. [The presence of such an icon is not a guarantee of total security, the validity of certificate is to be checked by double clicking on the padlock].

5. Does Wi5 use WEP to provide a secured connection?
No. WEP (Wire line Equivalent Privacy) is based on what's called "shared secret" encryption. The key to the encryption (the "secret") must be shared with all users of a WLAN which uses WEP. This is not a practical or an effective security technique for use on a public network.

6. How secure are web mail services?
Most web-based email services transmit messages "in clear text", i.e. as unencrypted text. Email that is unencrypted may be vulnerable to attempts to intercept it. Wi5 does not provide security for other, 3rd party, services including web-based email.  If one uses unencrypted email service, it is strongly recommended to avoid transmitting confidential or sensitive information, and encrypt all attachments before sending them.

7. Does Wi5 support the use of VPNs to access email and enterprise applications and data?
If a WLAN is used to send or receive information that is considered confidential, Wi5 strongly recommends the use of a VPN (virtual private network) to enhance the security of communications. Wi5 supports the use of VPN solutions.

8. What about instant messaging - is it secure?
No. Most instant messaging services transmit communications as clear, unencrypted text - on both wired and wireless networks. This means that the information is vulnerable to attempts to intercept and read it. If one chooses to use instant messaging while being connected to a Wi5, it is strongly recommended not to transmit information that is considered confidential.

9. How can I increase the security of my communications?
Unfortunately, there is no solution or practice that guarantees 100% security of communications. However, there are some things that can, and should be done to enhance data security whether using Wi5 or any other service to access the internet.
• Don't lend your computer (or other internet access device) to anyone whom you don't know and trust
• Don't leave your computer or device unattended
• Watch out for "over the shoulder" viewing of your login, credit card and/or other personal information
• Use passwords that are a combination of letters and numbers
• Keep your passwords and account numbers secure. Don't share them, and don't store them on your computer and/or device.
• Log out of web sites by clicking "log out" instead of just closing your browser or typing in a new URL
• When transmitting confidential information, look for the indications of a secured site, i.e. "https//…" in the address and a locked padlock or key icon on your browser
• Use a personal firewall if possible
• Use a VPN solution if available
• Don't send information that you consider confidential over instant messaging and/or unsecured web-based email services
• If you're not locating and/or connected to a Wi-Fi service, disable your device's wireless capability

10. I want a secure network. What is the procedure to get the same?
An encrypted connection can be provided as an additional service.

Shielding kids from Internet porn
Internet porn and its appalling visibility rates have always been a topic discussed with much interest worldwide. The ethical strains of the issue still stay debatable while there would be no denying that what has been done to shield children from the perils of porn on the Net, is not enough.

There have been commendable efforts by individuals and organisations towards facilitating a shield for families to guard children from Net porn

WiseChoice.Net is one such effort. And a compact one at that. Here, all the filtering takes place on the servers and not on the computer. Every time an Internet address is typed in,
a link is clicked on or a word is searched for, the address or the word is routed to computers where it is checked against the Wisechoice's block list.
If the request made is not on the list, the browser proceeds to the requested site. If otherwise, you get a message stating the requested site has been blocked. The whole process takes less than a second once it reaches the Internet.

With Wisechoice, the browsers don't even have to do monthly downloads, constant monitoring or rating sites.

Whether to filter the content your kid is accessing or not is obviously based on your personal convictions and values. Many filters have already hit the market, with provisions ranging from keeping history off accessed content to blocking access to chat and undesirable content.

Services like America Online and other Internet Service Providers allow parents to block certain services. However, it goes without saying that a better option would always be taking a close look at your kid's Internet habits.

Different filtering tools operate in different fashions. Certain tools limit access to a specific list of websites classified as "inappropriate." While some companies pick what should be filtered, others let parents do it, among pre-set categories.
Some companies operate by employing people to look at and classify web pages into categories that a parent may or may not choose to block.

Certain filtering tools limit access to sites containing key words like "breast." There are also tools which block only the bad words and not the text surrounding them. Some filters

apply to websites, others to e-mail, chat and instant messaging, newsgroups, or a combination.
There are also tools which analyse the language around key words to avoid blocking combination of words like "breast cancer".

Net Nanny:
Net Nanny claims that it will protect children and free speech on the Net. It also advertises that due to its filters, Net Nanny will ensure on-line safety for user. Cybersitter: Solid Oak’s CYBERsitter claims to offer the safest way to explore cyberspace, for its users. It also claims to have by far the most technologically advanced filtering product on the market due to its use of an intelligent content recognition system, which recognises even brand new sites. Because of these technological advances, CYBERsitter is "guaranteed to block over 95 per cent of all objectionable content".

Cyber Patrol:
Cyber Patrol advertises itself as the best way to manage children’s computer use and safety on the Net. It claims that all sites on its blocked list are reviewed by a team of Internet professionals, including parents and teachers. Cyber Patrol further claims that all blocked sites have been reviewed by human eyes.

SurfWatch:

SurfWatch claims that more than eight million copies of its product have been downloaded, thus making it the most popular, trusted product for harnessing the positive potential of the Internet. Its mission statement notes, "We empower people with the information, technology, and tools they need to harness the positive potential of the Internet." With a blocked site list of more than 100,000 URLs, it claims to be 90-95 per cent effective in blocking objectionable sites, and due to its team of professional web surfers the product will always remain up to date. SurfWatch also advertises that all blocked sites are seen by human eyes, and that difficult decisions are referred to an Advisory Committee of parents, professionals, teachers, law enforcement, clergy and community members.
